The term, trailiac, comes from combining the words trail and maniac.

A trailiac is a person who has a passion for hiking footpaths.  This type of person is always thinking about hiking when not traveling on a trail.

  • Before a hike, a trailiac is planning the next hike, selecting gear, calculating mileage
  • During a hike, a trailiac is exactly where he or she belongs
  • After a hike, a trailiac reflects on the hike and considers what could have made it better

Jeff Foxworthy is an American comedian known for his punch line, If <condition>, you might be a redneck.  We can use this format to better describe a trailiac.

If you know the weight of each piece of your backpacking gear, you might be a trailiac.

If you stare at trail maps in your free time, you might be a trailiac.

If you hike in all kinds of weather, no matter how uncomfortable, you might be a tailiac.

If you have planned hiking trips for the next few years, you might be a trailiac.

If you don’t mind cooking your meals on a stove made out of a cat food can, you might be a trailiac.

If your friends have asked you to stop talking about your hiking plans, you might be a trailiac.

If you consider a visit to your local outfitter as entertainment, you might be a trailiac.
