Description: This trail leads from the U.S. border with Mexico, to the U.S. border with Canada, passing through wilderness areas in California, Oregon, and Washington.  The southern 700 miles are through arid landscape, with long stretches between water sources.  Traveling north, the trail rises into the Sierra Nevada and then onto the Cascades.  Trail elevation ranges from sea level to 13,153 feet.

Terrain: Most of the trail is within protected wilderness.  The PCT passes through desert in the south and mountainous terrain in California, Oregon, and Washington.

Dangers/safety concerns: Infrequent water sources in southern region.

Hiking season: snow-free season.

Sleeping facilities: camping, motels (in towns)

Allowed modes of travel: hiking and horseback riding
